William Ropp summons up a strange and haunting world through the lens of his art, but it is not an altogether unfamiliar one in spite of his showing us people and things we have never before seen. It is unsettling and disturbing, yet it also attracts and compels us because it is beautiful, erotic, and often frightening. His work is rich with the trill of beauty, sex, and fear, three of humanity's most powerful drugs. But those narcotics alone are not what we sense in Ropp's art as familiar. They are only the outer cloaks, the flesh, of something else we know far more intimately.

De veelzijdige Amsterdamse fotograaf Jan Schiet (1921-1964) hield zich vooral bezig met industriele, mode-, architectuur-, en reclame-fotografie. Zijn inventiviteit, originaliteit en improvisatievermogen sloten uitstekend aan bij de wensen van zijn opdrachtgevers en leverden foto's op vol vitaliteit.
In 1952 trad Jan Schiet toe tot de Nederlandse Fotografen Kunstkring (NFK). In deze monografie zijn 65 foto's afgebeeld, zowel vrij werk als foto's die hij in opdracht maakte.

Huub Schilte (1953) and Jacqueline Portielje (1958) work and live together in Rotterdam- The Netherlands. From 1993 onwards, they both intensively explored the rich possibilities of the computer as an artistic medium, using it both as a photography dark room and as a drawing/painting tool. Their ideas about art were so complementary, that creating works of art together became the rule rather than the exception: since 1997 they present their work under the composite name Schilte and Portielje. One of the reasons for working in black and white is that they want their work to be midway between photography, drawing and painting. As artists they feel the challenge to reflect in a visual way upon the complicated world. The interpretation of the result of their work is up to the beholder.

POPFOTO'S VAN NICO VAN DER STAM
YESTERDAY
Nico van der Stam [1925-2000] is ongetwijfeld Nederlands grootste onbekende popfotograaf uit de jaren zestig en begin jaren zeventig. Jaar in jaar uit prijkten zijn foto's in de toen alom bekende Rijam-schoolagenda, vaak echter zonder naamsvermelding. Autodidact Nico van der Stam was een pionier: een beeldcultuur voor popmuziek bestond nog niet. Hij fotografeerde de prille Nederlandse popscene en degenen die Nederland aandeden. Onwennig stonden de nog jonge pophelden voor zijn camera, onder wie: Golden Earrings, Shocking Blue, Bintangs, The Outsiders, Brainbox, The Rolling Stones, The Supremes, Frank Zappa, The Beach Boys en vele anderen. Met humor en betrokkenheid verhalen de auteurs op persoonlijke wijze over deze kleurrijke periode uit de hedendaagse cultuurgeschiedenis.
